The MetaTrader 5 (MT5) platform is very popular and gaining momentum. This is evident from the trading platform’s usage numbers for Q3 2025. The platform accounted for 62% of all retail CFD trading on MetaQuotes platforms during the quarter, overtaking its predecessor, MT4, in trading volume. The popularity of MT5 stems from its flexibility, advanced features, like multi-asset trading and automated strategies, a variety of trading tools, and suitability for both beginner and professional traders.
However, to optimise the use of the platform so that you never miss out on a trading opportunity and stay informed about your trading activities, you must configure notifications on MT5. The immense customisability of MetaTrader 5 is another reason for its popularity. It offers multiple notification options to help you monitor the markets and your open positions.
Notifications are essential trading tools. They alert you to significant market events. You can be informed about price movements and get updates on your orders. This helps you react quickly to market changes while also ensuring that you don’t miss important opportunities. By configuring notifications, you can also stay informed about important market events without having to constantly watch the screen. Notifications alert you about price levels, trade executions, margin warnings, and deposits/withdrawals, enhancing trading efficiency and reducing stress by automating market monitoring.
MT5 offers several types of notifications.
Alerts are a versatile notification type on the MT5 trading platform.
First, open your MT5 trading platform. Locate the “Terminal” window. You can usually find it at the bottom of the screen. If it’s not visible, go to “View” in the top menu. Then, select “Terminal.”

Within the Terminal window, you will see several tabs. Click on the “Alerts” tab. This tab manages all your active and pending alerts.

Right-click anywhere within the “Alerts” tab. A context menu will appear. Select “Create” from this menu. Alternatively, you can press “Insert” on your keyboard. This will open the Alert Editor window.

In the Alert Editor, you can customise your alert:
After configuring, click “OK” to save the alert.
Push notifications are great trading tools for traders on the go. They send alerts directly to your mobile device.
Open the MT5 app on your mobile device. Go to “Settings” and look for “Messages” or “Chat and Messages.” You will find your unique MetaQuotes ID there.

On your desktop MT5 platform, go to “Tools” in the top menu and select “Options.”

In the Options window, go to the “Notifications” tab. Check the box “Enable Push Notifications.” Enter your MetaQuotes ID in the designated field. Click “Test” to send a test notification. This ensures everything is set up correctly. Click “OK” to save.

Email notifications are another useful feature of the MT5 trading platform. They provide a record of alerts.
On your desktop MT5 platform, go to “Tools” in the top menu and select “Options.”

In the Options window, go to the “Email” tab and check “Enable.” Enter your SMTP server details. These include the SMTP server address, port, login and password. You will need your email provider’s SMTP details.

Successfully configuring notifications on MT5 is a crucial step in optimising your trading strategy. By utilising Alerts, Push Notifications and Email Notifications, you transform the trading platform into a dynamic assistant. These essential trading tools ensure you are instantly aware of price triggers, order executions and important market developments, even when you’re away from the screen. Consistent and timely information allows you to manage risk and seize opportunities, turning passive monitoring into active, informed trading. Make sure to regularly test and refine your notification settings to keep them aligned with your current trading goals.
